Prevention

Our responsibility

The Cannabis Social Club Dortmund e.V. is strongly committed to the responsible and risk-conscious use of cannabis. The principles of transparency, professional competence and absolute confidentiality are at the heart of our comprehensive prevention work.

Our aim is to help you as a member to minimize the risks of cannabis use and to cultivate a mindful and health-conscious approach through well-founded education, individual advice and targeted support services.

For us, prevention means more than just providing information. Rather, it is about strengthening your self-determination and personal responsibility. We focus on your needs and life realities and rely on an appreciative, accepting attitude. Only in this way can messages of risk minimization and consumer competence really get through.

A core element of our prevention approach is to promote a critical and reflective attitude towards your own cannabis use. We encourage you to regularly question your consumption behavior, recognize warning signs early on and take countermeasures if necessary. To this end, we provide you with important knowledge about

  • Effects of cannabis
  • Safer use rules
  • Strategies for reducing consumption

At the same time, we want to empower you to make independent and informed decisions. We respect your self-determination as an adult and do not raise our moral finger. Instead, our aim is to reduce the likelihood of risky consumption patterns through education, advice and the strengthening of protective factors.

Another pillar of our prevention work is the early detection and early intervention of problematic cannabis use. Our trained prevention officers act as low-threshold contact persons who offer you confidential help and support. If necessary, we can refer you to the professional addiction support system and work closely with local specialist agencies.

Education and risk minimization

A central element of our prevention strategy is to provide detailed information about the effects of cannabis and the potential risks of using it. We provide detailed information in regular educational events and confidential one-to-one meetings:

  • Mode of action: Different effects of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids
  • Acute side effects: Anxiety, nausea, circulatory problems
  • Long-term consequences: Dependence, concentration and memory disorders
  • Safer use: strategies for low-risk, healthy consumption
  • Interactions: Dangers of mixed consumption with alcohol, medication, etc.
  • Legal aspects: Legal regulations on cannabis possession and use

We attach great importance to factual, evidence-based knowledge transfer based on the latest studies. At the same time, we strive to present the information in a way that is appropriate for the target group and easy to understand, using interactive methods such as discussion rounds and self-reflection exercises.

Promotion of self-determination

We want to encourage you to develop a conscious, reflective attitude towards your cannabis use and to exercise self-control. This includes skills such as:

  • Realistically assess consumption and risks
  • Observe safer use rules
  • Be mindful of changes in your own well-being
  • Setting boundaries and being able to say "no"
  • Using alternatives to consumption for relaxation
  • Know and accept offers of help

We want to promote the development of consumer skills through information materials, offers and the exchange of experiences within the association. An important aspect of this is strengthening your self-efficacy and confidence in your own abilities.

Ultimately, only you can decide for yourself what role cannabis should play in your life. We want to support you in making this decision in an informed and self-determined way. Our aim is to reduce the likelihood of risky, harmful use through education, advice and the strengthening of life skills.

Early detection and intervention

In order to recognize problematic developments in cannabis use at an early stage, we train our members to recognize possible warning signs of risky use or the development of addiction. These include, for example

  • A significant increase in the frequency and quantity of consumption
  • Neglect of everyday duties and social contacts due to consumption
  • Continued cannabis use despite negative consequences such as concentration problems
  • Occurrence of withdrawal symptoms and strong cravings during breaks in consumption

If you observe such signs in yourself or others, we offer confidential counseling sessions promptly to discuss the situation and look for solutions together. We see ourselves as low-threshold contacts who are available with empathy and expertise.

If necessary, we can refer you to professional help services such as addiction counseling centers or therapists. By working closely with the local addiction support system, we can guarantee quick and uncomplicated referrals. Our aim is to identify problems as early as possible and take countermeasures before a manifest addiction develops.

In addition to individual support, we also focus on promoting a mindful consumer culture within our association. We encourage our members to talk openly about problems and concerns and to support each other. Through regular group meetings and moderated exchange sessions, we create spaces for honest dialog and the development of caring.

Cooperation with specialist agencies

To ensure the high quality and effectiveness of our prevention work, we work closely with local addiction prevention facilities and specialized experts. We incorporate their expertise into the design of our services, use tried-and-tested prevention concepts and undergo regular training.

By networking with addiction counseling centers, therapists and self-help groups, we can provide a wide range of further support services. At the same time, we benefit from the exchange of experience with the specialist agencies and work together to help shape the prevention landscape in Dortmund.

Science is also an important partner for us. We participate in research projects and studies at TU Dortmund University in order to expand our knowledge of effective prevention in the cannabis sector. At the same time, we use the latest scientific findings to continuously develop our work and keep it up to date.

Last but not least, we advocate a rational, health-oriented cannabis policy at a social and political level. We take part in demonstrations and expert committees, bring in the perspective of users and argue for an evidence-based drug policy that focuses on prevention, harm minimization and self-determination.

An important concern for us is the creation of a regulated, legal levy for recreational cannabis. We see this as an opportunity to strengthen youth and consumer protection, increase product quality and safety and dry up the black market.
