Synthetic cannabinoids are substances made in a lab that bind to the same sites in the brain as THC. Many of them act much more strongly and for longer. Possible effects are a racing heart, severe agitation, hallucinations, seizures and serious poisoning; there have been deaths.
The treacherous part: they are often sprayed onto plant material, including CBD flowers, and sold as “natural cannabis”. They cannot be recognised with the naked eye. Anyone who takes cannabis of unknown origin can therefore never be sure what is in it.
HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) is chemically similar to THC and was sold for a while as a “legal substitute”. According to the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, psychoactive effects are to be expected at the usual amounts, and larger amounts can lead to serious poisoning. Since 27 June 2024, HHC has been covered by the New Psychoactive Substances Act in Germany and is prohibited.
Remember: Cannabis of unknown origin may contain a much stronger substance. In the event of a racing heart, a seizure or unconsciousness, call 112 immediately.
